Watson’s mentor in mind after title glory

-

KAI Watson’s mother says the young Northcliffe member’s “emotional” Under-15 ironman title is a fitting tribute to his late mentor.

Watson, 15, yesterday claimed the prestigious Matthew Barclay Memorial Trophy at the Queensland State Youth Life Saving Championships at Sunshine Coast.

Watson’s mother, Melinda, said the loss of long-time mentor Craig Blanch to cancer in late 2016 ensured the victory on the beach was extra emotional.

“It’s was his and Kai’s dream to win this,” she said.

“They had a lovely little friendship so it’s nice it all panned out.

“It was very emotional. “It was something Kai always wanted to do so he’s so happy about it.

“He’s always been really good at the iron and he’s gone in a few(competitions) over the years but he’s always come second. This is the first time he has won at states so he’s very excited.”

Watson switched from Burleigh to Northcliffe this season, yet the real work has happened behind the scenes.

The family lives in Brisbane’s east – about an hour away – so only fit in training sessions on weekends.

“We’re one of those crazy families,” Melinda laughed.

“It’s not too bad because we usually travel quite early.

“At the moment he does (want to take the sport more seriously) but 15-year-olds change their minds pretty quickly.

“His hearts in the surf at the moment so we’ll see where it goes.

“He hopes to go to the Aussie titles so we’ll see what happens from here.”
