Minchin: HOTA taking risk with me
TIM Minchin has performed on some of the world’s biggest stages but admits he still gets pre-show jitters.
The UK-born Aussie comedian, actor, writer and musician said he would be playing a range of material when he makes history as the first person to take the stage at the Coast’s new ‘Home of the Arts’ amphitheatre on March 17.
“(At HOTA) I’ll be saying whatever comes into my head. What happens on the night is a one-off experience and it’s scary as crap for a performer. I have to sit backstage and put my big boy pants on.”
Minchin, who wrote the music for Matilda: The Musical and has gained worldwide notoriety for his satirical songs like Come Home (Cardinal Pell) and I still call Australia Homophobic, said the new HOTA amphitheatre would add value to the Gold Coast.
“I’m not everyone’s cup of tea, which is OK, but it’s great to see that they’re like ‘we’re going to take a risk with this guy and compete with the big cities’,” he said.
“It says a lot that they got me in to perform ... they’re not going with the ‘beige’ thing.”
