EAGLES LAND STAR SIGNING

CURRUMBIN’S influx of talent has skyrocketed with the presence of big forward Dayne Weston.

The 31-year-old only retired from pro league last year, cutting short a deal with Super League side Leigh Centurions to move back to Australia and raise sons Jett, 8, and Blaze, 5, on the Coast.

“It’s a beautiful spot to bring the kids up,” he said.

Despite having former Melbourne champion Matt Geyer in the coaching ranks, the Eagles’ profile is dwarfed by rivals such as Tugun.

Weston is eager to leave the club in a better place than when he started.

“I always said I wouldn’t play again but I came back and have just had that drive to want to give back to the community a little bit and the place where I am living,” he said.

“Matty Geyer first approached me to see if I was interested in playing and/or coaching.

“I was a bit hesitant at first but then after that I was excited by the opportunity to just help out at a club that probably isn’t as high profile as some others that surround it.”

Weston knows Geyer from his Storm days in 2014-15. His 80-game NRL career also included time at Cronulla, the Cowboys and Penrith.

It is not the Goulburn product’s first time playing footy on the Coast, though. Mid-career Weston hit a rough patch and rediscovered his love of the game by spending the 2010 season playing for Burleigh.

“That year is something that helped me kick on my career,” he recalled.

“It was just getting back to the little things and enjoying footy and just being around a good bunch of people.

“That’s the same here. There is a lot of good young kids that I have already seen training that will one day be aspiring to play NRL and if I can be of any assistance or guidance to any of those kids coming through, that would make me happy.”

Weston is balancing playing footy with his personal training business and parttime role as an NRL development officer.

Currumbin, coached by Ryan Gundry, have also picked up long-time Tweed Seagulls Intrust Super Cup halfback Michael Burgess.
