THE decision to trial a customs clearance port at Southport Yacht Club has been such a success, the federal government should rubber stamp a permanent home today.

The decision already has proven a boon for the city’s tourism sector, creating a gateway for deep-pocketed visitors to come directly to the Gold Coast without stopping in Brisbane first.

Buyers are lining up for the latest Maserati and Porsche, among others.

Since July, 35 foreign-based superyachts have come direct to the Gold Coast. The owners of the vessels are not here on a budget holiday. They are spending on average $25,000 a day.

The trial has created a new market for the Gold Coast with the potential for enormous growth, and we should run with it.
