COAST’S WORLD WAKEBOARDING CHAMPION GETS HIS MOJO BACK
IT’S not every day the reigning world champion is looking to bounce back from a rough year.
But that’s exactly the case for Gold Coast wakeboarder Cory Teunissen as he prepares for this month’s world championships in Argentina.
The 20-year-old daredevil won the most recent edition two years ago and is eager to defend his crown after a subpar – by his standards, at least – 2017 world series.
“I didn’t do very well overall last year. I think I came third overall,”
Bulletin.
Teunissen is one of three Gold Coasters in Australia’s team of eight for the championships. Young guns Hayden Bru and Mackenzie McCarthy are also Argentina-bound.
It’s yet another international location that McCarthy will tick off her list by age 13, having already competed in nations such as Canada.
She will compete in the 10 to 14-year-old age bracket, as will Bru despite now being 15 – the age cut-off is January 1, at which stage Bru was 14.
For Teunissen, life as he told the a professional wakeboarder sees him spend half the year in Orlando, Florida, regularly travelling on the world tour through the States and abroad.
But as he puts it, “home is home”, and he is always looking forward to his next chance to be back on the Gold Coast.
“Ask anyone that knows me, I’m always so excited to come home,” he said. “It’s one of the best places in the world, if not the best. It’s so perfect for a crazy lifestyle.”
The world championships will be held in Buenos Aires from March 18-24.
