Fight KO’d by security demands

- LEA EMERY

A GOLD Coast boxing match dedicated to ex-bikie associate Liam Scorsese who was shot dead by police in Brisbane officers has been cancelled because police wanted to triple security at the fight.

The tight security order was made due to fears about the crowd at Scorsese’s friend Brodie Mortimer’s bout at Mantra on View in Surfers Paradise.

Tables worth almost $3000 for groups of 10 had been sold with some people requesting to be sat far apart.

Mr Mortimer was told on Wednesday police were asking a heightened police presence for the March 22 fight, a part of Fights by the Sea.

Mr Mortimer was friends with ex-Comanchero associate Scorsese and Mr Mortimer’s brother is former Finks member Benjamin Mortimer, who was last year jailed for the manslaughter of Max Waller.

The fight was also to be dedicated to mental health charity Livin’.

The other fights will still go ahead, including the headliner Queensland Middleweight Championship bout.

Gold Coast police Assistant Commissioner Brian Codd said police were aware of the fight. He said they did not have the authority to cancel a fight.
