AUSSIE SKIPPER SWEATS ON HAMSTRING SCANS
AUSTRALIA’S rugby sevens captain, Lewis Holland, will have scans tomorrow to determine the extent of a hamstring injury, less than a month before the Commonwealth Games.
Holland was one of three players injured during the world series leg in Canada, with Tom Connor (eye socket) and Lachie Anderson (head knock) all finishing in the casualty ward.
The Australian team for the Gold Coast Games will be named later this week, with Holland and Connor forced to sweat on the results of their medical reports once they land back in the country.
Anderson is understood to already have the green light, while game-breaking Maurice Longbottom (ankle) is expected to be fit for the tournament after an extended rehabilitation break.
Australia finished sixth in Vancouver and sit fourth overall in the world series standings, having won the Sydney leg earlier this year.
Playmaker Holland has been one of the team’s best this season and was instrumental in that Sydney tournament, which marked the side’s first world series win in six years.
The 25-year-old will be hoping for good news after a hamstring tear ended his 2016 Olympic campaign on the first day of competition.
The men’s sevens team is drawn with England, Samoa and Jamaica for the Games, with South Africa, New Zealand and Fiji the clear standouts in the other pools.
Australia’s women’s team have not played a world series leg since dominating in Sydney but travelled to the US this month for friendlies against the red, white and blue to gain valuable game time.
