Less is not always more in finals bid

-

BROADBEACH general manager Jason Cotter says the reduction of games needed to qualify for QAFL finals by NEAFL-listed players to three won’t guarantee success for any team this season.

Players listed with NEAFL clubs have previously needed to play six games with the QAFL team they are aligned with in order to be part of the finals but that number will be halved in 2018 under new rules.

It means those who may have just missed the cut in years gone by could be eligible to chase a premiership, increasing the pool of talent clubs have to choose from at the most important time of the season.

But Cotter said clubs may resist the urge to stack teams with NEAFL talent if those players dropping back were arriving disenchanted after struggling at the level above.

“You have got to take in to account how they come back,” Cotter said.

“They can be disenchanted when they come back. It can play in to anyone’s hands.

“It’s a case-by-case basis and depends if they feel aggrieved.”

Broadbeach are one of four teams aligned with NEAFL club Southport Sharks.
