GOLDEN GIRL KELLY TURNS ON THE POWER

-

PARALYMPIC gold medallist Kelly Cartwright’s impressive transition of sports has reached new heights after being selected in the Australian para powerlifting team.

The 28-year-old from Geelong was a former star sprinter and long jumper who won gold at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Cartwright made the change to powerlifting after injury curtailed her athletics career.

“The injury put me in the gym for the past four years,” she said. “That’s when I started to realise how much I loved weights and realised the weights I were pushing were competitive.”

Cartwright placed 15th at the world championships in November, her first major international powerlifting competition.

She lifted 56kg in the 50kg category, a mark she is aiming to better at GC2018.

The para powerlifting competition is on Tuesday April 10 at Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre.
