Council workers set to walk out

-

GOLD Coast City Council has assured residents there will be no disruption to service on the Glitter Strip today, despite the threat of a day of wide-scale industrial action.

Members of The Services Union working at the council, which has a workforce of more than 3500, will participate in an all-day work stoppage “in pursuit of a fair and just Enterprise Bargaining Agreement”.

A rally will be held at the Broadwater Parklands at 11.30am, with union officials hopeful of attracting thousands of disgruntled members.

However, the council has assured residents it will be business as usual across the city and had information that only 115 staffers planned to participate in the industrial action.

The action follows a decision by the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission to order a cease to industrial action from the end of this week until after the Commonwealth Games.

Services Union secretary Neil Henderson disputed claims that only 115 workers would bother to turn out.

“If 115 members have chosen to tell the council they plan to join industrial action, there will be many others who didn’t,” he said.
