Corey to fight for Games

- BRENT O’NEILL

GOLD Coast’s newest Kookaburra, Corey Weyer, concedes he is no certainty for a home Commonwealth Games debut, despite starring in Australia’s run to the Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia.

After earning his first Kookburras cap in November, the 21-year-old defender took his international games tally to 14 in the side’s 2-1 victory over England in the Azlan Shah final on Saturday night.

However, with veterans Mark Knowles and Eddie Ockendon in his way, the Labrador Tigerstix product admits he could still find himself on the outer when Australia’s Games squad is named tomorrow.

“I’m not too sure (about selection) at the moment, it’s really fierce competition. We’ve got some really good experienced players who have been there for a while,” Weyer, raised on the coast but now based in Perth, said.

“There’s a couple of young guys who are fighting to get a start and make the spot our own. Obviously there are guys like Mark Knowles and Eddie Ockendon there who are hard to get past.

“I’d love to play at a home Commonwealth Games but you try not to think about it too much.

“The boys have normally done really well at the Commonwealth Games but there’ll be some other good teams so it should be a nice close comp and hopefully get another gold.”

Weyer said he was slowly finding his feet in a Kookaburras side that will chase a sixth-straight Games gold medal from April 4-15.

“Every game I get a bit more confident and a bit more comfortable,” he said.
