KEYS TO SURFING KINGDOM

-

In a week where she took down six-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore on her way to a final showdown at Kirra, the Mooloolaba surfer once again proved she made the right choice when her parents gave her an ultimatum at 16 years of age.

“I played pretty much every sport you can imagine when I was younger,” Andrew said.

“Hockey, tennis, touch football, cricket, AFL, soccer. I was actually lining up to be a professional tennis player but my parents made me choose a sport at 16 and I chose surfing.

“I like the whole creative side of it. You can do whatever you want – the way you surf the wave is entirely up to you.”

That decision to chase waves now has Andrew sitting at No.2 in the World Surf League rankings – and her proud parents shaking their heads at where they’ve ended up as well.

“It’s pretty cool,” Narelle said. “You don’t realise how special it is until you’re in it.”
