Unsavoury incident at school

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND

A MAN has been charged after a dramatic disturbance at a Gold Coast school.

Police swarmed Bellevue Park State School just after 8am yesterday after a parent and his two children were allegedly threatened by a man.

The father, who declined to be named, said he had met with a former partner at 8am to allow their two children to play together when a man, known to both of them, came up and threatened them.

“Basically there was a threat to myself and my children,” he told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

“Threats were made on our life. It got quite aggressive to the point where I feared for mine and my kids’ life.”

He said after the threats, the man walked into the school grounds and police were called.

The father said the school dealt with the man swiftly, with principal David Hartley keeping the man in an office until police arrived.

A 36-year-old Surfers Paradise man was arrested and charged with one count of wilful disturbance. He will face Southport Magistrates Court on March 26.

Queensland Education assistant regional director Darren Scott said police went to the school but it was not put in lockdown.

“The safety of the children was not at any risk,” he said.
