FORMER Gold Coast City councillor Eddy Sarroff says Tom Tate misled voters during their 2012 Mayoral election campaign when he gave his support for the Bruce Bishop car park.

In the final week of that campaign, Mr Sarroff predicted Mr Tate, if elected, would sell off the car park and Surfers Paradise Transit Centre.

Mr Tate rejected Mr Sarroff’s claim at the time, telling the Bulletin: “He (Sarroff) made it up. It’s a figment of his imaginatio­n. I will fund my promises from cutting wasteful spending”.

Mr Sarroff yesterday said the decision by the Tate council to sell the car park was proof that he had been right.

“You (the Mayor) have misled voters big time,” Mr Sarroff said.

“It is hard to understand why the Mayor would champion the sale of the asset when he promised to keep this massive public land in the heart of the city at a time when the businesses he represente­d as chair of the chamber of commerce are crying out to stop the loss of more car parks.”

Mr Sarroff said he had issued a warning in May last year that Cr Tate should not be voting on the sale.
