INLAND SUBURB COAST’S FISH AND CHIP CAPITAL

- DENISE RAWARD

AT 12 kilometres from the sea, Mudgeeraba has emerged as the fish and chip capital of the Gold Coast.

Three fish and chip shops in the residential suburb have taken top five positions in polling to unearth the Gold Coast’s best fish and chips.

It’s quite an achievement for an area off the tourist trail. Proprietor of Fresh Coral Seafoods at Mudgeeraba Platon Kaplanidis said it’s precisely because of the local competition that Mudgeeraba’s establishments have to be at the top of their game.

“It’s a great thing for Mudgeeraba that you don’t have to go far for good fish and chips,” he said.

“We don’t often get tourists that venture here so we just look after our locals as best we can because we rely on them coming back again and again.”

Only three of the Coast’s top ten fish and chip establishments are near the ocean.

Local seafood aficionado Shannon Baier-Dry, proprietor of 8th Avenue Terrace at Palm Beach, said that surprises him as eating fish and chips by the beach is the ultimate seasoning.

“There’s a ritual to eating fish and chips, a real emotional connection to something everyone would have done as a kid with their families,” he said.

“It’s good to see there’s more of an effort to source good quality, local product in fish and chip shops now.

“I think that’s the way the industry is going and it’s great to see it flowing through.”
