STAR SOLUTION

-

IT’S a fair point. The Star is part of the Broadbeach Safe Night Precinct so should be part of the solution in boosting security at a blackspot walkway where two men were savagely bashed.

Technically, the violent robbery occurred outside the casino’s “jurisdiction” – a point The Star has made.

But the incident happened virtually on its front doorstep, on the convention centre side of the bridge linking the casino to the rest of Broadbeach.

The victims have said they believed they were followed by four of their attackers soon after walking out of the front entrance of The Star. That has to be of concern for casino management.

Precinct president Louise Huxham’s comment that The Star should contribute is valid, given the argument that whereas clubs and bars in Broadbeach have to stop serving at 3am and have to pay for compulsory ID scanners, the casino is exempt from those regulations and is able to trade 24 hours, becoming a magnet for crowds who have to move on when nightclubs stop trading.

Everyone benefits if security is tightened to the point that bash gangs give up. Be that as it may, police must make some arrests in this case, providing justice for the victims and peace of mind for everyone else as the Commonwealth Games loom.
