WEATHER FOUL BUT BITE HOT

-

IT is a great time of the year.

The prawns are running, mackerel are around in great numbers, marlin are prolific if you fish the right areas and there are heaps of muddies around too.

Only problem is the weather, it has been horrible. The rain and wind has made it virtually impossible to get offshore but as the old saying goes “nothing lasts forever” and that includes poor weather.

Once the wind drops there are plenty of options for us.

Firstly, off Jumpinpin Bar plenty of anglers bagged out on Spanish mackerel last week fishing in just 15m of water with deep diving lures. There are heaps of spotty mackerel in amongst them too.

Just remember your bag limits – five spotty mackerel per angler and three Spaniards per angler.

Out wider the marlin have returned in unbelievable numbers.

If you have never caught a marlin before now is your chance. Head out to Spot X or Deep Treg which are in around 80m of water.

Look for the bait schools on your sounder and drop a live bait down in free spool into the bait school. Then it is just a matter of waiting for the scream of the reel.

This is my favourite type of marlin fishing as there is always something happening, you are either catching live bait or marlin.

It is also worth trolling skirted lures over the bait schools as there are wahoo and big mahi mahi around as well and both are really great eating.

If you’re super keen head out even wider and try your luck for big blue marlin but I recommend fishing for the small blacks in 80m of water as the bite right now is as good as it has been all season and who knows how much longer it will last.

Bottom fishing is really hard going at the moment due to the very strong current so I recommend giving it a miss for a few weeks.

If you can throw a cast net get down around the powerlines at Jacobs Well or the mouth of the Logan River as there are heaps of banana prawns still being caught.

They are smaller sized than earlier in the season but what they lack in size they make up for in numbers.
