United lose as defence stands tall

-

CAPTAIN Neesa Doyle says Gold Coast United’s stoic defence amid a Brisbane Roar blitzkrieg could be the catalyst for a climb up the NPL Women’s (NPLW) ladder.

While United fell 2-0 on Friday night against a Roar outfit expected to challenge for this year’s title, their backline remained strong in the absence of Doyle’s central-defensive partner, Ellie Fryer.

With Californian Anjel Brown holding her own in Fryer’s absence, Doyle (pictured) said the talent was there for United to move from midtable into the top four.

“Our defence was great (and) our communication and discipline. The backline stood up well,” the former Palm Beach and Gold Coast City star said.

“Roar are technically a great side. Their movement off the ball made it quite difficult to defend.

“I’m super proud of the work rate from every player. We showed a lot of heart that’s for sure, against a brilliant side.

“Our preparation for this game was crucial for us, we studied Roar closely and limited their opportunities to penetrate. Anjel had a stellar game tonight, making some crucial tackles.”

United struggled in attack, failing to score for the first time this season.

United faces another monumental challenge at home to unbeaten The Gap in Round 8 at 5pm on Saturday.

The club’s men picked up a crucial 1-0 win over North Queensland United in Townsville on Saturday night.

Sitting 10th, they host Mackay and Whitsundays at 7pm on Saturday.
