Masters eyes elite double

- CAMERON WARD

KURRAWA’S Bree Masters has set her sights on a rare double at the Australian championships after beating a starstudded field in the open women’s beach sprint.

Masters edged out clubmate Nicole Kay and Currumbin’s Elizabeth Forsyth to win, before placing third in the open beach flags.

The 22-year-old said it was a big confidence boost ahead of next month’s national titles in Western Australia.

“I’m going to set the bar high at Aussies and say I’d like to win the sprint and flags double in the opens,” she said.

“No one’s ever done that before but it’s always been a massive goal of mine.”

Masters also teamed with Kurrawa clubmates to win gold in the open women’s beach relay, taking the title ahead of Currumbin, and she said it was great to get the edge over their fierce rivals at the pointy end of the season.

“There’s always been that rivalry between Kurrawa and Currumbin and we’re the two strongest beach teams in Australia,” she said.

Kurrawa didn’t have it all their own way, with Forsyth claiming gold for Currumbin in the beach flags.

Currumbin also won the men’s beach relay, while Tjimarri Sanderson-Milera took out the men’s beach sprint.
