IT’S TIME FOR A FIESTA

Don’t be fooled by the no frills can – this Victorian drop knows it’s what’s on the inside that counts

- WITH BOB ANTHONY

THERE seems to be a growing stream of “Mexican” brews venturing north of the Murray River.

Joining the south-of-the- border “beervasion” is a drop from Hawker Brewery, Rover Henty Street Ale.

This Victorian beer is nothing to look at with the can adopting a no-frills “home brand” look, but as any beer drinker knows, it’s what’s inside that counts.

After pouring it into a decent glass, you’ll find there’s nothing “home brand” about it.

Rover has a decent hop note to the aroma, but doesn’t overdo the hops — it is an IPA style and the balance is very good. It has a cloudy, deep golden colour with a lingering tight, white head.

The initial mouthful delivers plenty of hop flavour, slightly citrusy and very refreshing.

Balance to any decent beer is the key (in my opinion) and Rover Henty St ale offers a degree of bitterness that draws you back. It is a very sessionable thirst quencher.

At 4.3 per cent, it is full strength but doesn’t sit heavily in the gut, even though it does have decent body.

It also retains a lingering aftertaste and there is enough complexity in the flavour to leave you wanting more.

It would be well-suited to salt and pepper squid, fresh seafood or a Caesar salad.

Don’t let looks fool you — maybe Hawkers Brewing is rightfully putting effort into impressing with what goes inside the can instead of primping the packaging.
