SALE OFFERS INSIGHT INTO ARCHITECT’S CUTTING-EDGE STYLE

- JESSICA BROWN

HE’S the mastermind behind some of the Gold Coast’s most luxurious houses and now renowned architect Paul Uhlmann has put his own home on the market.

His Fingal Head beach house on the Far North Coast of NSW has the cutting-edge design expected of an architect’s home.

Built into the hillside, it has a large bay window that makes the most of the views down the Tweed River.

Mr Uhlmann had his eye on the block at 30A Bambery St for years prior to buying it and had a good idea of what he wanted to build.

“The design is split level – it’s built into the hill,” Mr Uhlmann said.

“That was why we wanted to get this piece of land because we thought it was one of the best blocks there.”

Mr Uhlmann said the open living area flowed onto the courtyard on one side of the house and had views of the river on the other side.

“We get about 3km of river views,” he said.

“Nearly everyone walks into it and goes, ‘I can’t believe you’re moving, it’s amazing’.”

He said they decided to sell the beloved family home because their children were going to school further north.

“We got stuck doing too much driving, that was literally the only reason,” he said.

An architect for more than 30 years, Mr Uhlmann’s many achievements include the Gold Coast’s first “floating house”.

He was fond of the design because it was an “interesting solution” to the complications of building on a smaller block of sloping land.

“The way some of the verandas are cut back, it’s very dramatic,” Mr Uhlmann said.

The three-bedroom, twobathroom property has a sunken outdoor lounge with fire pit, a cinema room, an outdoor concrete bathtub and an indoor pool.

The interior is a flow of matt black, copper and timber finishes, with timber framing the great views.
