DEVELOPER GETS INTO GAMES SPIRIT WITH SIGN OF SUPPORT TO ATHLETES

- ALEISHA DAWSON

COULD this be the answer to the controversy over the multimillion-dollar Gold Coast M1 gateway sign at Yatala?

Giant steel letters have been erected at Helensvale with a message of support to athletes competing in the Commonwealth Games.

The 2.5m letters, reading “GO AUSSIES”, are positioned on the corner of Country Club Dr and Brisbane Rd. Villawood Properties paid for the letters and installation – the developer is currently building Helensvale community The Surrounds.

“They are there to create conversation and engage the community,” executive director Tony Johnson said.

“This is an exciting time for the Gold Coast, heralding a new era in the region’s growth and maturity, and we want to show our support for homegrown athletes.”

Funded last year by the council, the 11m tall M1 gateway signs at Yatala were created in the hope of making a city icon on par with the Hollywood and Welcome to Las Vegas signs. But the colourful poles have come under fire in recent weeks, with confusion and some anger over the money spent.
