Star vision revealed
Four new towers planned for site
STAR Entertainment Group’s multi-billion dollar masterplan for Broadbeach – revealing an extra four towers dwarfing its existing hotels – has had first stage approval.
The Gold Coast City Council planning committee yesterday unanimously endorsed The Star masterplan for its island site ahead of the full council’s consideration tomorrow.
An artist’s impression showcases the four proposed new towers. They would be on top of the existing original hotel The Star Grand, new luxury suite hotel The Darling and Tower 1, scheduled to start construction soon after the Commonwealth Games.
The four new towers don’t as yet have a time frame for completion and require final approval from the Attorney-General’s office. But the Bulletin can reveal the hotel and residence highrises would stand at 65, 74, 54 and 52 storeys and comprise a further 1794 apartments and 518 rooms.
Planning committee chairman Cameron Caldwell said the multi-billion dollar plan was just what the city needed post-Games.
“It’s a wonderful development proposal which shows a continuation of Broadbeach as an accommodation and activity hub. It gives a clear signal The Star group are invested in our city and prepared to continue to invest.
“It is an ideal site on its own island with wonderful amenity, close to the beach and light rail and really is a very good development proposal,” Cr Caldwell said.
“Importantly, it is postCommonwealth Games and this type of project will underpin our success as a city and our ability to maintain a positive economy.”
If the city council rubberstamps the recommendation by its planning committee, The Star would start to engage with State Government via the Attorney-General.
A spokesman for The Star Entertainment Group told the Bulletin: “We welcome the support of the planning committee at Gold Coast City Council.
“It’s an exciting proposition for us, to consider significant expansion of the already substantial tourism infrastructure on Broadbeach Island. However, the approvals process is ongoing.
“Along with our partners Chow Tai Fook and Far East Consortium, The Star Entertainment Group has enormous confidence in the future of southeast Queensland and a deep commitment under the right conditions to investing in the region for the economic benefit of the Gold Coast and the State.”
The Star tonight launches The Darling and tomorrow hosts the launch of its “next level” bar and restaurant, Nineteen at The Star.
