BAKER MAKES RIGHT MOVE

- BRENT O’NEILL

FORMER Gold Coast Titan Luke Baker is making the right moves – in more ways than one – as he fights for a winning start to his professional boxing career.

The 24-year-old played 20 games for the Titans’ under-20s in 2014-15, before a horror run of injuries forced the Lismore product away from rugby league.

But with the competitive desire still burning, Baker enlisted the help of trainer Jamie Meyer last year – and he has not looked back.

After 11-straight amateur wins, the light heavyweight will step into the professional ranks for the first time against Lyndon Doraho at Surfers Paradise’s Mantra on View Hotel tonight.

It is the first step in a plan he hopes will carry him to a state title by December.

“I want to take it all the way. I’m the type of guy that will always give 100 per cent,” the Reedy Creek resident told the Bulletin.

“In the last year of footy, I broke my jaw, tore my pec, tore my calf and then I had surgery on both hips.

“(They were) injuries that really stopped my momentum and stopped me enjoying footy as well.

“I had a couple of corporate fights and then last year I approached Jamie and said ‘I really want to have a crack at this, will you train me?’. The rest is history.”
