ABUNDANT NUMBERS OF JEWIES IN SEAWAY

-

LOCAL diver Ian Banks was in the Seaway on Monday and took this photo of an impressive school of jewfish.

Having dived with Ian in the Seaway many times myself, I can tell you this school is only the tip of the iceberg.

There are schools of thousands in the Seaway at the moment.

Every time I come out of the water having experienced a dive with Ian I have the same thought: “How is it possible not to catch a jewfish every time I come here?”

And they’re there all year around.

The biggest mistake I see fishermen make is fishing in the wrong areas. Most of those targeting jewies will fish the end of the northern wall and while some fish do school there it isn’t their preferred spot.

The biggest schools, by far, congregate directly in front of the Seaway tower along the southern wall.

Surprisingly not too many anglers fish in this area with most opting to drift the northern wall.

Land-based fishermen could also easily target the school from the rocks too.

Use live bait and remember the minimum legal size is 75cm and a bag limit of two.
