FLOCK PERFORMANCES A FOIL FOR SPORTS FESTIVAL
VISITORS to Surfers Paradise Beach during the Commonwealth Games might stumble across a puzzling display within reach of the waves.
Inspired by ‘meaning in the natural world’, 60 local dancers will take to the sand to perform ‘FLOCK’, with the Coast sunset as the backdrop.
The performance is part of Festival 2018, an event which GOLDOC CEO Mark Peters says takes a step back from sport to showcase the arts.
“We’re exploring what diversity there is across the Commonwealth Games, so we know about the sport, but we also have the fantastic festival,” Mr Peters said.
The performance isn’t without its risks, however, with artistic director Danielle Micich saying there were a few challenges involved.
“Obviously with (the costumes), people might get blown away, people might roll into the water,” Ms Micich said. “So it’s been a wild and woolly process.”
Coombabah local Jaimie Burrows, 17, said ‘FLOCK’ was more than she had ever expected it to be when she auditioned in late December.
“The biggest challenge so far is not being able to see or hear anyone, it’s a little bit surreal,” she said. “You sort of feel like it’s going to be so stressful, but once you’re inside you’re sort of more in the space of ‘okay, this is what I’ve got to do’, and then it becomes more enjoyable.”
‘FLOCK’ begins its run at 4.30pm on April 12.
