Roar’s top six dream sinks

-

BRISBANE Roar have blown the chance to move into the ALeague’s top six after being held to a 2-2 draw by competition cellar dwellers Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium.

A week after beating firstplaced Sydney FC, the Roar failed to get the better of the last-placed Phoenix despite having led 1-0 through a 50thminute Brett Holman goal. A win would have lifted Brisbane into the top six after Western Sydney’s 3-0 loss to Melbourne City on Saturday night.

But with three rounds remaining, the Wanderers remain in sixth place, a point ahead of Brisbane.

If the Roar fail to play finals football, they will rue their failure to beat the Phoenix on three different occasions this season.

The depleted Phoenix, who were without eight players through international duty and injury, started well with two chances in the 21st minute.

The Roar were mainly reduced to long-distance strikes in the opening stanza.
