Security services ready for all eventualities

- CHRIS MCMAHON

FEARS of vehicle attacks similar to those throughout Europe, as well as mass shooting events across the globe have led to unprecedented levels of security at the Commonwealth Games.

QPS Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said police, defence force and other agencies had taken measures to deal with any eventuality.

“There is no specific threat against the games or against anything in Queensland, but of course we live in a probable threat environment,” he said.

“Everything that has happened overseas in the last few years and indeed in this country, we have prepared for, we have exercised for, we have planned for and have the appropriate resources in place to deal with.”

Major General Paul McLachlan said the Defence Force had been extensively involved in planning for the Games and were ready to deploy counter-terrorism capabilities if needed.

“We also have high level counterterrorist capabilities which will be made available should the situation require them,” Maj Gen. McLachlan said.
