Local crew to match it

AUSTRALIA’S boxers have arrived on the Gold Coast confident they can challenge the Commonwealth’s best in the ring.

Australia won two gold and a silver in Glasgow and Jason Whateley and Skye Nicolson are confident they can match that after a training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in the lead-up to their arrival into the Games village.

Whateley, who also represented Australia at the Rio Olympics, said all members of the team were realistic medal chances.

“We’ve trained so hard for it and, so now we’re here, it’s time to go and I think we’ve got a good chance of all of us getting medals - if not all gold,” said Whateley, who arrived into the Gold Coast airport to an excited reception from Australian team staff and fans.

“To come here and see that, it’s really sunk in that we’re here for the Commonwealth Games in Australia and proud to be here.

“As soon as we get in (to the village), reality is going to set in.”

Gold Coaster Skye Nicolson is also gunning for gold in the 57kg division.

“I’m feeling very confident, I’m here for gold and that’s what I plan to take away with me from the end of the tournament,” she said.
