Hopes fade for Aussie

AN Adelaide-based British crewman taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race has fallen overboard in gale force conditions in the Southern Ocean, 1400 nautical miles west of Cape Horn.

Race officials said John Fisher, a British native who has lived in Adelaide for about 10 years, was wearing survival equipment when he went over.

In a statement released on Monday, they said the chances of finding a missing sailor were rapidly fading. A ship 400 nautical miles away had diverted to the scene.
