Sound night’s sleep with a twist at festival

- SUZANNE SIMONOT

AN activity that usually attracts a fine will become a world premiere artistic experience for two nights only during this year’s Bleach* Festival.

Wave Fields, a new work produced and commissioned by the city’s annual multi-arts celebration Bleach*, is a sleepover on the beach with a twist.

The snooze meets slumber show will wrap participants in a blanket of sound created by internationally renowned artist Lawrence English while they settle in to sleep under the stars on the beach at North Burleigh.

Bleach* Festival artistic director Lousie Bezzina said Wave Fields was a chance for audiences to experience how sound drifts in and out of dreams to complement and interrupt our sleep.

“It’s a one-off cultural experience on the beach for up to 200 people a night,” she said.

“The soundtrack plays all night until sun up and moves through the night to match your sleep cycle.”

Participants bring their own bedding, swag or sleeping bags, with the event to take place around fire pits and a rectangular sound barrier.

“We’ll have yoga mats there for everyone for a little bit of protection and as part of their ticket ($20 via the festival website), people get a light supper and warm drink in the evening and breakfast and yoga session in the morning,” Ms Bezinna said.

Wave Fields plays Mick Schamburg Park at Burleigh Heads on April 6-7.
