SPRITELY JIM HAS SPRING IN HIS STEP
THERE’S no chance of Jim Purdon taking it easy during the Commonwealth Games, even at the age of 76.
As well as being the Queen’s Baton bearer for Emerald Lakes, Mr Purdon will be attending events, volunteering – and keeping up with his regular exercise routine.
“The boys and I go for a swim three times a week, but we have had to walk right around the beach because of all the activity,” Mr Purdon said.
“It’s a little further but we are all looking forward to it.
“I am going to the opening ceremony, swimming, athletics and rugby 7s.
“That and my eight shifts, I expect I’ll be pretty busy.”
One of the original members of the Coolangatta Surf Life Saving club, Mr Purdon said he was honoured to be selected to run with the baton on Sunday.
“The Commonwealth Games for me is about a better understanding through sport and communication,” Mr Purdon said.
“We need to be able to communicate with one another.
“I can’t stand politics in sport and this is one way we can get to know each other better.”
Joining him on his run will be Mr Purdon’s fiveyear-old granddaughter and seven-year-old grandson.
“It is really great for them too, so they can understand the Commonwealth Games – healthy body, healthy mind,” he said.
Mr Purdon’s leg will begin at Upper Coomera near the council chambers, at 2.45pm on Sunday.
