OPTIONS FOR ALL AT EASTER

-

THERE is good and bad news over the Easter long weekend.

The good news is we will wake to light winds every day. The bad news is the light winds will not last so make the most of the early mornings if you are planning on getting offshore.

Good Friday is traditionally one of the busiest days of the year and patience will be needed at all our boat ramps. Expect parking inspectors and water police to be out in force.

It is shaping up for a great long weekend with plenty of options for the hardcore fisherman or those just wanting to spend time with the family trying their luck for a whiting.

The recent big swell has created new surf gutters and the whiting and bream are exploring those gutters. Yabbies, pipis or beach worms are good bait.

For those heading offshore chasing mackerel, the last week has been all about quality rather than quantity.

Big Spaniards have been landed out the front of Jumpinpin and on the closer reefs like Mermaid and Palm Beach.

We are still seeing spotty mackerel, especially on first light. The marlin bite has slowed a little but those putting in the time are eventually being rewarded fishing spots such as Spot X and Deep Tree in around 80m of water.

With the temps expected to be close to 30C over the long weekend, big mangrove jacks should be firing up. We have seen some brutes landed in the past week in the Nerang River, with plenty longer than 50cm.

A great activity for the family over Easter is crabbing. Kids love pulling the pots up and parents love eating what is inside the pots so it’s a win-win.

There are heaps of sand crabs in the Broadwater, just keep an eye on your pots as someone may check them before you do. Happy Easter.
