EINSTEINS OF THE SEA A POPULAR TARGET

-

GIANT herring have become a popular target for some Gold Coast fishermen.

What makes the giant herring such a prized catch is firstly they are very smart. If mahi mahi are the dunces of the sea, giant herring may well be the Einsteins.

Blessed with exceptional eyesight, they also have bony mouths with sandpaper-like teeth making them difficult to hook. They are also built for speed, sometimes getting called the greyhounds of the water.

They often refuse to take a lure unless it looks almost identical to the bait school they are targeting at that moment. Even if you do receive a hook up it is likely that it will take a few before you actually land one, such is the difficulty in fighting such a fast fish with bony mouths.

There are reports of fishermen having in excess of 30 strikes before actually catching one. The best way to catch a giant herring in the canals is to flick lures towards the drains that have water running out.

But the easiest way is to try your luck on lakes that have slat water run off. As a result, golf courses have become a popular location for some Gold Coast fishermen.
