Kickert given another shot
PART of Boomers forward Daniel Kickert regrets passing up a shot at Commonwealth Games gold 12 years ago.
So he intends to make every bucket count next month.
Kickert was near the end of his stellar US college career at St Mary’s when the Australian side for the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne was being picked.
The sharpshooter opted to stay in the US to finish off his degree instead of attending the Boomers selection camp.
“At the time, I chose to stick around in the US and get my degree … instead of coming home and being a part of the camps,” the 34-year-old said.
“In hindsight, it probably would have been a good decision to come home but you can’t change the past now. But I think being a part of an Australian team at an event like the Commonwealth Games will be pretty special.
“It’s been a long wait and I’m grateful for another opportunity.”
Australia are red-hot favourites to win Commonwealth gold and will play their first pool game against Canada in Cairns on Friday, April 6.
The Boomers will go into camp in Cairns on Saturday.
