Maiden win gives Ethan fair float to work with

- TOM BOSWELL

HOW does a trainer celebrate the first win of their horse’s career? They get a new float, of course.

Young Ballina trainer Ethan Ensby will use the prizemoney from Latino Lover’s win in the Maiden Plate (2200m) on a heavy Gold Coast track on Saturday to update his horse carrier.

“He has paid for himself and our new horse float that we ordered last week so that’s good,” Ensby, 22, said.

The maiden win came after 12 failed attempts by Latino Lover, who Ensby bought for just $4000 at the Gold Coast National Racehorse Sale in June last year.

The son of Street Cry has already won $16,935.

“He has been a little bit disappointing until (Saturday),” Ensby said.

“He has only run a couple of places and has been a bit of a hard horse to get going.

“He had a few little issues but we have sorted them.

“Finding a wet track has been the problem but we have found it here.”

Latino Lover wasn’t on Ensby’s radar at the sales but his attention was drawn to the horse’s sire.

“I always wanted a Street Cry,” Ensby said.

“He wasn’t actually in our picks because I didn’t have the supplementary catalogue.”

Latino Lover wasn’t Ensby’s first Gold Coast winner.

He won twice with Nomad in 2015. Floral
