MATES SEE BEST OF KANE BACK IN ACTION

- RIKKI-LEE ARNOLD

THERE was a moment last week when Titans skipper Ryan James looked at Kane Elgey and thought “he’s back”.

It was during a training session in the lead-up to their stunning victory over the Broncos and the young half had just thrown a long pass, similar to the one he hit winger Phillip Sami with in the opening minutes of Sunday’s clash.

James could see Elgey was finding confidence again.

The 24-year-old had a tough ride over the last two seasons. After a breakout year in 2015, Elgey missed 2016 with an ACL tear and then came back last season struggling with his form and self-belief.

“It’s good to see him playing with confidence, chucking that long ball,” James said.

“I smiled to myself when I saw him throw one at training the other day and I thought, ‘he’s back’. He threw a couple (against the Broncos) and they all pulled off.”

Elgey has spoken openly in the past about the mental demons that haunted him last year but said it could still be tough to find that self-belief.

“You can’t do much (to gain confidence),” Elgey said. “You just have to keep going and be strong. Coming out against the Broncos and winning, it shows good character.

“I’ve been told many times I just have to play off my instinct and try not to think too much, and that’s where my best footy has been.”
