Training to become a medal hope

- TOM BOSWELL

AN overhauled training program from one of her biggest rivals has put paratriathlete Sara Tait in the hunt for Commonwealth Games gold.

Tait has revealed how advice from former surf ironman Brad Fernley, the coach of compatriot and PTWC gold medal contender Lauren Parker, gave her the tools she needed to take it to her rival and fellow Aussie Emily Tapp.

Twelve months ago the 20year-old, who has spina bifida, spoke sought advice from Fernley after her third place finish at last year’s Gold Coast World Paratriathlon Series event.

“He just looked at everything I was doing and said exactly what I needed to be doing,” Tait said.

“He was so great about it and I’ve definitely felt the improvements from implementing all the training plans.”

Tait has since put together a 12 month training block with Team T-Rex Tri Club coach Teresa Theaker at Runaway Bay she said has put her in the frame for a potential upset in an event where Australia could win all three medals.

“Anything can happen on the day,” Tait said.

“I’m the youngest in the field and they are a lot more experienced than me. I just want to do my best when I’m out there and anything else is a bonus.”

“There would be nothing like (winning gold). You prepare your whole life for it but to have that moment would be a dream come true.”

Tait has celebrated enormous success already in a career that has lifted her spirits from a challenging life she believes has steeled her resolve and driven her to the top.
