Prime Minister honours fallen hero

- BRITT RAMSEY

A PROMISE made in Israel to the grieving father of our country’s 100th Victoria Cross recipient, by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, was honoured yesterday.

Mr Turnbull and his wife Lucy, met with Doug and Kaye Baird, the parents of Corporal Cameron Baird VC, at Currumbin RSL Club, for an intimate visit to the very special commemorative statue of their son, who was killed in Afghanistan’s Khod Valley on June 22, 2013.

“It’s very moving, and it’s wonderful to be here with Cam’s parents and to remember and honour his sacrifice because the values he fought and died for are Australian values,” Mr Turnbull said.

Mr Turnbull said it was important to him to fit the stop in to his busy schedule.

“We met Doug in Beersheba, for the celebration of the charge of Beersheba – and we talked about coming and joining him and Kaye here and remembering and honouring Cam,” he said.

“I think it’s important to honour and remember our heroes and this is a great initiative by the Currumbin RSL.”

Mr Baird thanked the Prime Minister for honouring his promise to visit.

“It’s an extreme honour to have our country’s Prime Minister paying homage to Cameron, it’s just respect,” Mr Baird said.

“... He acknowledged to me personally the commitment our family had made and also the sacrifice Cameron had made himself for our country.”
