WHITE-HOT CATCHES A RESULT OF NO NETTING

-

WE are seeing some massive whiting being caught around the Gold Coast at the moment and we may have our politicians to thank.

Professional fishermen are now outlawed from netting for whiting in many areas favoured by Gold Coast anglers and as a result recreational fishermen are reaping the rewards.

Ben Job scored this massive whiting while fishing with Ross McCubbin from Lucky Strike Charters on Easter Monday.

It went 42cm on the brag mat and is a PB for Ben.

PBs are becoming more commonplace and some locals are saying the whiting fishing is better than ever.

Fraser Island used to be the go-to location for many chasing whiting but nowadays not only are the numbers not what they used to be but neither is the qulaity with a large percentage being undersize.

Some blame the netters for decimating the stocks.

Fortunately the same can’t be said here on the Gold Coast where we are enjoying big numbers and big fish.

Such is the demand for whiting fishing, Lucky Strike Charters have been pioneering a new technique for targeting them and the results speak for themselves with regular hauls of 20 or more big whiting from our Broadwater.

While Ross won’t give away all of his tips unless you charter him he says “fish with a light sinker using yabbies on the sandbanks at high tide”.
