VOLUNTEERING A FAMILY TRADITION FOR DONELLE

- BRIANNA MORRIS-GRANT

FOR some, the process of checking in, ushering and guiding spectators around venues might seem tedious but Donelle Coulter couldn’t be more excited.

The 58-year-old retiree is one of 15,000 volunteers at the Commonwealth Games and she loves it, saying it’s in her blood.

Growing up, she watched both of her parents volunteer through the local Lions club, a tradition they continued for 50 years.

“Life was always volunteering. They always thought it was the right thing to do,” Ms Coulter said.

“I went to see the (Brisbane) Games in 1982 and I remember seeing the volunteers and thinking, ‘one day I’d love to do that’.”

After retiring from 25 years of teaching at Mudgeeraba State School, she decided it was time to move on from the classroom and follow the dream.

Now Ms Coulter is a team leader at Carrara Stadium, responsible for more than a dozen people and loving it.
