POLITICAL leaders have left their government-issue cars behind and caught public transport as they’ve attended events across the Commonwealth Games.
Social media has lit up during the first week of the Games with councillors and State MPs sharing happy snaps on the Gold Coast’s light rail as they’ve travelled across the city soaking up the action.
And Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk (pictured), who told the Bulletin in January she would ride the city’s trams while attending the Games, is the latest to join them
The Premier last night caught the light rail and spent time talking to fellow ticketholders. Among those who have also spruiked their journeys are Transport Minister Mark Bailey, Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath, Cr William Owen-Jones
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is also believed to have taken a ride on the trams during his visit to attend the opening ceremony and meetings with Prince Charles.
Ms Palaszczuk, Mr Turnbull and Games Minister Kate Jones were among a handful of dignitaries who were allowed to travel in Games Lanes as part of their official roles when presenting medals or attending the opening ceremony.
