REEL BIG DAY OUT

- TOM BOSWELL

GOLD Coast trainer Scott Morrisey has celebrated wins on both land and in the water over the weekend.

The Morrisey-trained Gwapo broke through for his first win in the Colts, Geldings and Entries Maiden (1400m) at Beaudesert on Saturday while the trainer reeled in an 85cm Murray cod with nephew Jay Young at Copeton Dam, near Inverell in northern NSW.

“We watched the race before we went out fishing,” Morrisey said. “It was very promising and a good win.”

Thankfully for Morrisey he didn’t have to wait as long for success with the fishing rod as he has with Gwapo.

“He has been a very difficult horse,” Morrisey said. “He is quiet but he is a very hard horse to ride, he gets very keen.

“We have done a lot of equestrian work with the horse because he is his own worst enemy in a race.

“We are trying to make him less fierce in a race which has worked. He has always promised a bit but now he has won.

“As a young horse he didn’t want to go early and always drew real bad barriers.

“In his first preparation he never drew outside the second last barrier. It was frustrating.

“In his next preparation he wanted to go a hundred miles an hour in a race and did a lot wrong. He is still not perfect in his races but we are starting to work him out a little bit so hopefully he can win another race again pretty soon.”
