Crowds give team a gilt-edged boost

WHETHER it be in the lift, at the food hall, at the team pool, grabbing a barista-made coffee or out and about, the Aussie team culture is fantastic and a pleasure to see from inside the Games village.

The crowds at the Broadbeach Bowls Venue have been fantastic, creating an amazing atmosphere.

It is great to see so many bowlers volunteeri­ng and being part of the event.

GOLDOC has done a fantastic job with the Games Village. It is amazing for the Jackaroos to rub shoulders with Australia’s best from various sports. And then there’s greens.

The Aussie women’s fours team of Kelsey Cottrell, Carla Krizanic, Rebecca Van Asch and Natasha Scott have won Australia’s first Games gold since Melbourne in 2006 after defeating South Africa yesterday.

After epic last-bowl encounters with Malaysia in qualifying and the quarterfin­al, they then did the same versus Canada in the semifinal, claiming a last-bowl victory to set up the gold medal showdown.

In a close tussle our girls went into the last end with a the action on the with Brett Wilkie

five-shot buffer and held their nerve to take out the title.

The current world champion quartet includes Gold Coaster Cottrell, who returned to the game after the birth of her daughter Sienna in August last year.

The event was made even more special for Cottrell with her mother at the final, the first game she has been to after battling a long-term illness.

Our men’s triples, featuring Barrie Lester and Helensvale duo Nathan Rice and Aron Sherriff, claimed silver after an amazing final against Scotland. It was a great campaign by our boys in a match that could have gone either way.

Jo Edwards from New Zealand claimed back-toback women’s singles gold after defeating Laura Daniels of Wales. Australia’s Karen Murphy was knocked out in the quarter-final.

Daniel Salmon and Mark Wyatt from Wales took out the men’s pairs gold, defeating defending champions Paul Foster and Alex Marshall from Scotland.

Aaron Wilson and I were knocked out in the quarterfin­al by Malta. Our vision impaired mixed pairs and athlete with a disability open triples teams are set to make the semi finals of their respective events.

The VIs will play their semi-final today at 4pm, with the medal matches tomorrow at 7pm.

The AWDs will play their semi tomorrow at 4pm, with the medal matches on Thursday at 12.30pm.
