Accused ‘not involved in shooting’

- LEA EMERY

A MAN who allegedly shot another man in the leg after an argument at Nerang is expected to appear in court this morning.

The 22-year-old man walked into the Southport Police Station yesterday after police had spent almost 24 hours searching for him.

The search included the police helicopter, the dog squad and several officers.

Defence lawyer Campbell MacCallum, of Moloney MacCallum Abdelshahied Lawyers, told the Bulletin the man would not be applying for bail at his first appearance in Southport Magistrates Court.

He has been charged wtih grievous bodily harm and possessing an unlicenced firearm.

Police will allege the man shot 28-year-old Matt Pascoe in the leg after an argument in Mortensen St just after midday on Monday.

It is understood the shot went through one leg and into the other.

Mr MacCallum said the man contacted him yesterday morning to arrange for him to talk to police.

“He indicated that he was surprised he was identified as the person,” Mr MacCallum said. “

As soon as he was identified he made immediate arrangements to surrender into police.”

Mr MacCallum said the man told him he had “nothing to do with the shooting”.

He said he understood there was “bad blood” between the two families and his client intended to defend the charges.
