WORLD AT FEET OF NERANG’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

- BRENT O’NEILL @Brent_ONeill

THEY have conquered their country.

Now, Nerang BMX’s newly crowned national champions are eyeing global domination at this year’s BMX World Championships in Azerbaijan.

Fresh off success at the national championships in Western Australia last month, Michael Robinson (masters men) and Kira Hill (14 years girls) will line up against the world’s best in Baku from June 5-9.

It was the eighth and third Aussie titles respectively for Robinson and Kira, while Nerang clubmate Erin Lockwood broke through for a maiden win in the elite women’s event.

All three will ride in the sixth and final round of the Shootout Series at Beenleigh on Sunday before heading to Victoria for Round 2 of the BMXA National Series in Victoria on April 21-22.

“I took a week off when I got back (from nationals) and now (I’m) starting to get back into the routine again,” Lockwood, who competed at last year’s world championships in the US, said.

“(I’ve been racing) 14 years, since I was a little grom (junior). I followed my brother into the sport, I used to sit and watch him whilst still in my pram.

“As soon as I was old enough I gave it a crack. My coach, Justin Lamb, and my parents are the most important people in my support network. They have both been by my side every pedal of the way.”
