Golds help next gen

-

OLYMPIC and Commonwealth Games champion Glynis Nunn predicts Gold Coast’s domination in its own backyard to ultimately deliver a new wave of talents.

Nunn won gold in the heptathlon at the 1984 Olympics, two years after taking the top prize at the Brisbane Commonwealth Games.

She says those moments only came about after a starryeyed junior watched her own sporting idols earlier.

“I remember walking up at stupid-o’clock in the morning and watching opening and closing ceremonies,” she said.

“Seeing things like that made me go ‘that’s what I want to do’.

“What (the current Games athletes) are doing is inspiring young athletes to go on and chase their own dreams.

“There are moments in life you go ‘right, that’s what I want to do’ and Commonwealth Games is one of those moments.”

Nunn, who now works with Gold Coast Academy of Sport, says she has recieved phone calls from families of youngsters asking how they can get closer to the action, such has been the renewed interest.

“Gold Coast is a good area because we’re not far from a capital city so we have the best options,” she said.
