‘No sign' of plan to disappear

- KIRSTIN PAYNE

AUSSIE training partners of the missing Cameroon athletes say they saw no sign of a planned escape and wouldn’t see any problem with them becoming citizens.

The community of Warwick, based in rural south east Queensland played host to the Cameroon team during the lead up to the Commonwealth Games.

For weeks the boxing and weightlifting athletes trained alongside members of the Warwick Boxing Club while taking up residence at a local school.

“They are really lovely, they said they enjoyed training in Warwick but there was nothing out of the ordinary,” Warwick Boxing Club secretary Danielle Lambert said.

“I think as long as they are good people and not breaking the law I can’t see why they shouldn't be able to stay here.

“They obviously left for a reason.”

Club President Mick Gaffney who also trained with the group said he wondered how the group would remain out of sight given the language barrier.

“I recognised a few of the athletes on TV tonight, they were all friendly but they couldn't really converse with us,” Mr Gaffney said.

“Most of the boxers couldn’t speak English, most of them spoke French so I was wondering how they are faring,” he said.
