Scary end to liaison

- LEA EMERY

AN online romance has ended in a horrifying spate of escalating violence culminating in the Surfers Paradise man allegedly breaking into his former partner’s apartment to beat her after she had dumped him.

In the worst of the incidents, last Thursday, the man, 36, allegedly held his forearm across the woman’s neck cutting off her air supply.

“I told you that you were going to die b----,” the man allegedly said.

The woman was living in fear and told police she did not report the man because she was scared of what he may do.

The man, who cannot be named, was denied bail yesterday in Southport Magistrates Court where he faces 14 charges including assault occasion- ing bodily harm, breaking and entering, stealing and drugs.

Magistrate Donald MacKenzie said the risk of the man committing another offence was too high for him to grant the man bail.

The pair met on online dating website Plenty of Fish seven months ago before the relationship began to deteriorate in recent weeks.

Police allege the man broke into the woman’s apartment three times and beat her, including one time where he choked her.

He allegedly sent a threatening text message which read: “I’ll be happy when you’re dead. I’ll see you soon sl--”.

When the woman broke up with him, the man allegedly returned to her apartment, broke a glass door and beat her before stealing her mobile phone.
