THE Surfers Paradise RSL had a battle plan going into the Commonwealth Games that appears to have worked.

Diggers running the club decided to target the volunteer army and the 3000 police assigned to the city who would be thirsty as likely replacements for regulars refusing to leave home.

“It worked because you could have fired a machine-gun down Beach Road and not hit a passing car,” a digger said.
